The Friends of Historic Sedgeley

More About Us and Our Mission

Who Are The Friends Of Historic Sedgeley?

Friends of Historic Sedgeley (FHS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit formed in 2012. Our friends are Officers and Directors of our non-profit corporation, volunteers for service projects, donors, our neighbors in Fairmount Park, generous corporate sponsors, Sedgeley Club members, and anyone who shares our common interests. We invite you to become a Friend of Historic Sedgeley at no cost to you. Friends may receive preservation project updates and news of welcome events, seminars, and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. We offer many ways for you to become involved in FHS and preserve a national landmark right here in Philadelphia.

Our Mission

The FHS mission is to maintain and preserve the Sedgeley Club building as a local and national historic landmark, and to promote the architectural and cultural significance of the boathouse and the lighthouse to the public through open houses and educational programs.

Statement

The official registration and financial information of Friends of Historic Sedgeley may be obtained by visiting www.charities.pa.gov. Registration does not imply endorsement.  A copy of this organization’s financial report can be obtained by Contacting Us or by sending an email to info@friendsofhistoricsedgeley.org.

Come Visit Us

In conjunction with members of the Sedgeley Club, FHS schedules times when the boathouse is open to the public for visiting and informal tours.  The lighthouse is not safe to climb, therefore access into the lighthouse is not generally offered, but may be considered upon request.  To inquire about upcoming open house dates and times please check out our Blog page or send us an email at info@friendsofhistoricsedgeley.org

FHS Preservation To-Do List – Top Priorities

Inspect the Sedgeley Club seawall for damage or weakness, including 100 feet upriver and downriver.

Est. $5,000.

Repair cracked exterior knee walls bordering riverside basement slab.   Est. $200.

Replace the indoor emergency lighting system. Est. $500.

Provide access to disabled visitors.  Install a ground-level, exterior lift near the front entrance, and provide a paved walkway with access to the lift.

Improve landscaping in the area.

Provide paved walkway access to the lighthouse entrance.

Cosmetic improvements (historically accurate) are to be funded partly by Sedgeley Club members. Such improvements are designed to increase public rentals for events and meetings – a primary source of net assets.

Continue to monitor and preserve the lighthouse.
